Carteret Correctional Center Release Paths
Carteret Correctional Center is a North Carolina Department of Adult Correction prison for minimum-custody men. It is not a county jail and is not operated by the Carteret County Sheriff's Office. NCDAC designates the Newport institution as a Reentry Facility. People approaching the end of state custody may take part in work release, which supports the transition from prison while the person remains under state rules.
A departure can mean post-release supervision, parole where the sentence is legally eligible, expiration or max-out of the prison term, a court-ordered release, or a transfer. Post-release supervision, often shortened to PRS, is a period of state community supervision that follows eligible modern felony prison terms. Parole is a Commission-authorized release that mainly applies to older or otherwise eligible sentences. Max-out means the sentence reached its calculated end. These paths do not carry the same legal status.

The form offers All, Active Inmate, Active Probationer/Parolee, and Inactive status choices. An active inmate is still in an NCDAC prison. An active probationer or parolee is in the community under state supervision. Inactive means the person is not now active as an NCDAC inmate or supervisee, though the full chronology still matters.
Use an offender number when it is known. Names can collide, and an older release row may appear above a later admission. The current status must be read before any sentence-history date.

- Search by offender number, or use the exact name with birth, age, race, or sex fields only to distinguish records.

The Carteret County release search overview distinguishes this state route from county, court, federal, and notification systems. The Sheriff portal does not supply Carteret Correctional Center prison releases.
Carteret Correctional Inmate Release Search
NCDAC also offers a dedicated Inmate Release Search. It can search by release county with year and month, or by name. Carteret appears as release county code 16. Results reviewed used the headings Offender Number, Last Name, First Name, Middle Name, Release Date, Primary Offense, and Type of Release.
This state released-first tool is useful, but “release county” is not the same as the county where a person was booked. It is not a Carteret jail release list. When reviewed on July 30, 2026, its year selector displayed 2024 through 2021 and did not display 2025 or 2026. That was an interface limitation at the time, not proof that no later releases occurred. Use Offender Public Information for the current record and ask NCDAC for a needed public release field that the screen omits.

Carteret Correctional Center Release Role
The official Carteret Correctional Center profile identifies a capacity of 300 and describes the prison's minimum-custody, male, reentry function. Capacity is a design or operating figure. It is not a live population count or a forecast of releases.
The profile's work-release detail is important because it shows a structured transition near the end of custody. Work release does not itself prove final discharge. The person's NCDAC status and sentence history remain the source for whether prison custody ended and whether supervision followed.
Carteret Correctional Release Supervision
Physical release from Carteret Correctional Center can begin a new state status rather than end state involvement. The N.C. Post-Release Supervision and Parole Commission sets PRS conditions and decides parole matters where parole law applies. NCDAC's Division of Community Supervision handles field supervision. Carteret Correctional Center Release Records
NCDAC states that basic conviction data, time served, sentence length, admission date, and release date are public. Most internal prison files are confidential under separate state protections. Combined Records authorizes state releases and audits the approved release date. If Offender Public Information omits a needed public field, use the NCDAC public-records route. Identify the offender number, Carteret Correctional Center, date range, and the exact admission, release, discharge, or transfer field requested.
Do not direct a Carteret County jail request to NCDAC. The Department expressly does not hold local jail records. Likewise, the Carteret Sheriff cannot supply the state prison sentence calculation or state discharge record. Naming the facility at the start prevents the request from reaching the wrong custodian.

Carteret Correctional Release Property
NCDAC release policy includes several transition steps at a releasing prison. Staff verify the return of personal property and prepare a transition-document envelope. Depending on what is available, that envelope may include a Social Security card, driver license, or another identification document. The policy also provides for a paper prison-release photo ID.
These are state-prison procedures. They must not be attributed to the Beaufort county jail. A person expecting release from Carteret Correctional Center should resolve a missing item through prison staff and the applicable NCDAC process. An ICE detainer is a request for a custodial agency to hold a person for up to 48 hours beyond the ordinary release point so federal immigration authorities can assume custody. ICE's Online Detainee Locator System focuses on current detention and may include ICE releases within roughly 60 days. A result there concerns immigration custody, not the NCDAC prison term. An older no-result cannot rule out prior immigration detention.
No official source reviewed showed a Carteret County ICE detention contract. The possibility that NCDAC could transfer a person under a valid hold does not establish that Carteret Correctional Center operates as an ICE site. Confirm the state release type first, then check the named receiving custodian.
